Edward Costello Obituary

Edward A. Costello was born April 1, 1958 in Newton, Massachusetts and passed away on February 28, 2026.  He graduated from Natick High School in 1977, before attending North Adams College. Ed is predeceased by his beloved Mother Lillian (Patuto) Costello, Father Robert Costello, Brother Robert Costello and Son Michael Costello.

Ed had a true lifelong love for the sport of hockey. His parents were the original co-founders of the West Suburban Arena in Natick, (now William L. Chase Arena), where his father even helped lay the very first bricks. Ed and his family, including his brothers and all of his children, played Natick Comets hockey from early childhood. Ed then played for Natick High School, receiving an All American Award. He became a coach in 1988, coaching all three of his children through their Comets years.

Ed worked as a rink manager in Natick, Chelmsford and Walpole. He was the man to see to get your skates sharpened! He welcomed so many into his home throughout the years, and reveled in the conversations that ensued while he worked away at the blades. His passion for hockey was evident in his love for showing off and sharing his extensive collection of Boston Bruins memorabilia. Ed also had a great talent for carpentry and handyman work. In his spare time, you could find him in the kitchen, cooking recipes passed down from his Mom, including his crowd-pleasing homemade pizza.

He is survived by Son Mark Costello and Wife Denise of West Roxbury, Daughter Katie Costello and partner Ethan of Cohoes NY, and Grandsons JP and Nick. Ed is also survived by siblings Donna Costello of Medway, John Costello of Natick, Sharon Matuewezsk and her Husband Ron of CO, Patrick Costello and his Wife Sharon of Mattapoiset and Richard Costello of CA. His sister-in-law, Pamela Costello, of Florida and he also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Ed will also be missed by his chosen family, including Brandon and Aaleyah who referred to him as “Grampa Ed,” and his dearest and truest friends, Thomas Sardina and wife Deborah.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.
